What’s with the blog?

22.02.23

Normally, when I think of blogs I imagine travelling, cooking, home DIYs and other topics of interest that normally involve the person's hobbies or profession. However, when it was suggested to me that I should start a photography blog I thought it was a silly idea. My original thought was that “pictures are worth a thousand words” Why add more to them? The more I thought about it I realized that if people look at my work as well as read the words attached to it then they would get to know me better. Using this blog allows me to explain my thought process a little more in debt and maybe I’ll even throw in a joke here and there. With this in mind, I would like to welcome you to my first blog post. I’d like to use this space as a quick get-to-know-me blurb that I couldn’t fit into my About Me page.

Hi! I’m Maria. My star sign is a Libra. I enjoy road trips to places I've seen on TikTok, music that would make your dad love me and time spent with my very large and sometimes incredibly obnoxious Italian family. I love books about Greek Mythology and magic. I’m the kind of person you’ll find in the corner of the house party with the dog. My life’s dream is to own a large piece of land and my very own farm, complete with cows, chickens and mini pigs.

So, why did I choose animal photography/videography as my career path? I have always had a passion for camera work. My first video camera came on the back of an iPod Nano in 2009. I would use it to film my cousins and me goofing around. It was bright purple and I still have it to this day. After that, I had crappy camera after crappy camera and used them to shoot tech class projects and edit them together. I graduated with High Honours from Seneca College in 2019 for Broadcasting Television (though I think it is under a different name now). This leads us to today…

After three years and one global pandemic, I became so tired of scrolling through Indeed and LinkedIn and applying for jobs I didn’t care for. I decided to go out on my own and pursue my work as an independent freelancer. I thought if I could control what I would work on I would have a better chance at happiness. Leading me to ask myself "What makes me the happiest?". I knew the answer was not weddings or engagement photos, it wasn’t family portraits or school photos, it was animals. I will never get tired of animals, with their kind eyes and big personalities, I always find myself gravitating toward them. Not to mention, other animal lovers are probably the coolest people to talk to. I've met so many amazing people because my dog has no boundaries when we go to the park.

If you’ve read this far I’d like to thank you for taking an interest in me and my work. I hope to hear from you about what I'm sure will be amazing ideas we can work through and create together.

Do you sign off at the end of blog posts? Not sure, but I’ll do it just in case,
